1. Sir Frederick Napier, 1842–96, British administrator, born in Canada; governor of WA 1883–89.

/brum/ (say broohm)

a town and port on the north-western coast of WA on Roebuck Bay; pearling.
The discovery of rich pearl-beds in Roebuck Bay led to the founding of Broome in 1883 on land traditionally inhabited by the Jukun people. The port quickly became the centre of a thriving pearling industry, employing first Aboriginal and then Malay and Filipino divers, and eventually controlled by Japanese and Chinese businessmen. With the depletion of the pearl-beds by the 1920s, Broome's population began to decline. In 1942 it was the target of several Japanese air raids which killed a number of people: perhaps over 100, although estimates vary. The town's economy is now based on the cultured-pearl industry, which started after World War II, the local beef industry and tourism, including being a departure point for tourism to the Kimberley. It has an international airport and is the regional hub for north-western Australia.
